G3 and the Mecha Rams in the Cheshire Herald!

For those of you who missed it, Michael Torelli of the Cheshire Herald did a wonderful article about our ‘Summer of the Robots’ in the August 8, 2013 paper. Below are scans of the article pages. Once again, I’m really happy G3 was able to partner with the Cheshire High School Mecha Rams for this awesome summer series, and I hope we can do something with them again in the future!

Nik Wallenda makes another world record!

Remember when we did our program about balance? And remember how we talked about Nik Wallenda’s walk across Niagara Falls?Β  Well, our friend Mr. Wallenda made history again this past weekend when he became the first to do a tightrope walk across the Little Colorado River Gorge near the Grand Canyon, with no safety net or tether to prevent a fall! Apparently he had to kneel down to rub the bottoms of his shoes a few times because the cable had picked up too much dust and his grip was slipping, but he made it across with no major hiccups.

His next dream is to walk between the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in New York City…maybe we’ll see him breaking records again soon πŸ™‚

Freefall Parachuting World Record Broken!

As some of you may recall, back in our February 2012 program on Parachutes, I showed a really cool video about Joseph Kittinger, the first man in outer space who set a world record with the longest freefall parachute jump from the barrier of outer space. He set that record back in 1960, and nobody has ever broken that record…until now.

On October 14, 2012 that 52-year old record was finally broken! Felix Baumgartner, a former Australian paratrooper, not only broke Kittinger’s record for the longest freefall jump, but he also became the first man to literally break the speed of sound with his fall. After climbing 128,100 feet above the earth with the help of a helium balloon (similar to the method used by Kittinger), Baumgartner traveled at up to 833 miles per hour to reach the ground in the New Mexican dessert! His fall only took 9 minutes from start to finish. A short video of his jump, as posted on youtube by Red Bull, is below. Thanks to the camera attached to his suit, you can literally see the jump from his perspective!

After ascending 128,100 feet above the earth in a helium balloon on Oct. 14, Felix Baumgartner, 43, stepped off the edge and plummeted at a top speed of 833.9 miles per hour. After just over nine minutes, the former Austrian paratrooper landed in the New Mexico desert, having becomeΒ the first man to break the speed of sound in a freefall. Not too shabby, huh?….

Just in case some of you missed it, Josh Morgan at The Cheshire Herald did another great feature article about our Gizmos, Gadgets, and Goo program…and of course the young “scientists” who attend πŸ™‚ It was on Pg. 3 of the July 12th edition. If you can’t get your hands on an original, you can see the full article in the copy I posted below…

Hi, G3 crew and interested others!

Yesterday (Feb. 2), Josh Morgan ran an article about our G3 program (the Banana DNA experiment) in the ‘Around Town’ section of the Cheshire Herald. I’ll be sure to bring photo copies to our program on Feb. 9th, but you can also click on the images below to read the great article (clicking on the image will open a larger, easier to read version of each page) πŸ™‚

Several of our G3 scientists were quoted and/or photographed for the article!
